Celebrate the Fourth of July in Cortez

There's no better place to celebrate the Fourth of July than Cortez, where small-town charm meets big-time fun. Every Independence Day, Parque de Vida transforms into the heart of the celebration with an afternoon and evening filled with live music, delicious food vendors, a classic car show, family-friendly activities, and a lively beer garden. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, relax in the park, and enjoy the festive atmosphere as locals and visitors come together to celebrate America's birthday.

The City of Cortez has events planned throughout the day on July 3rd and July 4th. Starting at 3 PM on July 3d there will be food trucks and vendors in Parque de Vida, volleyball tournaments, and live music starting at 5:30 PM. The Fourth of July festivities begin a 12 PM the next day with more live music, competitions, and a car show. On Saturday morning, across the street from Parque de Vida is the local Cortez Farmer's Market, one of the oldest continuously running farmer's market in Colorado.

Mesa Verde National Park is also hosting the Annual Indigenous Art and Cultural Festival on the weekend of July 4th. Start and end your morning in Cortez but make sure to visit the Park for a celebration of culture, art, and history that is older than America itself!

As the sun sets over Mesa Verde Country, look to the sky for one of the area's most anticipated traditions—a spectacular fireworks display visible throughout Parque de Vida.

No trip to Cortez is complete without exploring the incredible landscapes and rich history of Mesa Verde Country. Just minutes from downtown, Mesa Verde National Park is home to some of the best-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in North America. While the scenic overlooks are breathtaking, the best way to experience the park is on one of its ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours. These tours take visitors inside iconic sites like Cliff Palace, Balcony House, Long House, and Square Tower House while park rangers share the fascinating stories of the people who called these mesas home for more than 700 years. Tour reservations are required and can be booked up to 14 days in advance through Recreation.gov, so be sure to reserve your spot before your visit.

Keep the adventure going after the sun goes down! On Thursday, July 2, join Cortez Tours for a Wild West Ghost Tour through historic downtown Cortez. This 90-minute evening walk uncovers the darker side of local history, featuring tales of notorious outlaws like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, mysterious happenings connected to Mesa Verde, and the legends that still linger in the shadows of Cortez's historic streets. It's the perfect way to experience a different side of Mesa Verde Country and add a little mystery to your Fourth of July getaway.
